The drama unfolded on a city bridge and was captured by on-board CCTV cameras. The driver, known as ‘Mr. Zhang’ slows down the bus as he approaches a stop on the bridge.
Moments before the mother and child can be seen walking briskly. It wasn’t until Zhang opened the doors that the mother suddenly grabbed the boy and moved towards the ledge.
From the video it’s clear she was intending to throw him off – but she hadn’t reckoned on Zhang’s split second reactions. Zhang was able to grapple the woman and boy to the ground before the deed could be accomplished. The video has been viewed over 250 million times on Chinese messaging app Weibo. Zhang, who has become famous in China, received universal praise on Twitter (X).

When asked what made him react so quickly, Zhang told local media that he had a ‘responsibility to help the community as a bus driver.’
