Woman sentenced for false rape allegations and threatening behaviour

A woman was sentenced in the Nelson District Court on Friday for making false rape complaints and issuing a threat to a police constable.

After engaging in a brief interaction with a man in Nelson City and exchanging numbers for a future meet-up, she falsely accused him of rape.

The woman, known for her frequent emergency calls and a history of 308 police interactions, including 16 unfounded sexual assault claims, was sentenced to a conditional release and warned about making false statements.

Her mental health issues and the strain her actions placed on police resources and the accused men were by sentencing judge Mike Mika. Despite her claims, investigations, including CCTV evidence, disproved her allegations, showcasing the challenges faced by both the legal system and individuals with complex mental health needs.

The woman’s name was suppressed on mental health grounds. She was sentenced to come up if called upon in the next six months on one charge of making a false statement that an offence was committed.
