On May 3, California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued the notice due to the foundation’s failure to submit annual reports and renewal fees on time.
The delinquency notice stated that the foundation is currently prohibited from soliciting or distributing funds until the compliance issues are resolved. “An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds,” the notice explained. Penalties could include suspension or revocation of registration if the necessary documents and fees are not submitted.
This setback appears to be due to a simple administrative error rather than any wrongdoing by the foundation. According to The New York Post, the Archewell Foundation had submitted the required filings on time, but the payment check was not received. After being notified of the delinquency, the foundation promptly sent a new check, expecting the issue to be resolved within seven business days.
Founded by Harry and Meghan in 2020 after stepping back from their senior royal roles, the Archewell Foundation is dedicated to charitable endeavors both locally and globally. Their mission is to “uplift and unite communities — one act of compassion at a time,” focusing on promoting systemic cultural change through partnerships and direct action.
Recently, during a visit to Nigeria from May 10 to May 12, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the extension of the Archewell Foundation’s collaboration with the GEANCO Foundation, which will now include mental health resources and training for young people. This trip marked their first international tour since stepping down as senior royals, highlighting their commitment to philanthropy.
While in Nigeria, they visited the Ilupeju Senior Grammar School in Lagos with Giants of Africa, another initiative supported by Archewell. The foundation’s efforts have helped expand youth-centric sports programs, including a new adaptive court and accessible sports opportunities in Abuja.
“Our mission is simple: show up, do good,” states the Archewell Foundation’s website. Despite the temporary administrative hiccup, Meghan and Harry remain steadfast in their mission to promote unity and service through their philanthropic work.
