Enoka, a former president of the Rebels Motorcycle Club’s Christchurch chapter and a member of the Tribesmen gang, was fatally shot on Seddon Street in Naenae on December 10.
Despite emergency responders finding him critically injured around 3:15 pm, Enoka died at the scene. Following the incident, police launched a homicide investigation and issued a warning that Kapene was armed and dangerous.
Kapene was apprehended on Christmas Eve after police executed several search warrants in Wairarapa.
Although initially unnamed, he was later charged with murder and possession of a firearm. Kapene appeared in Wellington District Court via AVL from prison on Friday, where the charges were transferred to the High Court for a January hearing.
While Kapene expressed a desire for name suppression, no formal application was made, as his identity had already been widely reported.
