The robberies resulted in over $400,000 in losses and the injury of an off-duty police officer who attempted to intervene.
Auckland District Court Judge Nicola Mathers, addressing Rawiri, emphasised the public’s frustration with such crimes.
The first robbery occurred at Gold House on Victoria St, where Rawiri and two teenagers, using a stolen car, stole jewellery and personal items valued at $161,425.
The second heist at The Hour Glass jewellery store was even more brazen, involving a group that attacked the store in broad daylight, causing significant injury to an off-duty officer and fleeing with substantial loot, though some was recovered after a botched escape.
Rawiri’s apprehension followed these incidents, along with a subsequent offense of violence.
Despite acknowledging Rawiri’s troubled upbringing, Judge Mathers handed down a six-year sentence, underscoring the gravity of his actions and urging him to make positive changes during his incarceration.
