Big cannabis operation in Whangārei busted, two arrested

Authorities have dismantled a significant cannabis enterprise, seizing thousands of dollars’ worth of plants and apprehending two suspects.

According to Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Crawford of Northland CIB, the Police concluded an investigation this week into a large-scale cannabis operation situated at a commercial site in Whangārei CBD.

‘On Tuesday, April 16, following our inquiries, specialised Police units, including personnel from the National Organised Crime Group, executed a search warrant at the location,’ said Crawford.

Police allege the discovery of over 300 cannabis plants at the site.

‘The scope of such a large operation could potentially generate millions of dollars illegally if left unchecked,’ said Crawford.

Police arrested two individuals, aged 36 and 38, suspected of involvement in the illicit activities. Both were apprehended at the scene without resistance.

Today in the Whangārei District Court the pair faced charges related to cannabis cultivation. Additionally, the 38-year-old is facing separate charges unrelated to the ongoing investigation, including failing to stop and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Police have not discounted the possibility of further arrests or charges.

Crawford said, ‘The cultivation, production, distribution, and trafficking of controlled substances remain significant contributors to serious criminal activity within our communities. Police will exhaust all available resources to bring those engaging in such activities to justice.’

He urged the public to promptly report any suspicious activities and encouraged those with information on suspected money laundering or drug-related offenses to contact authorities via 105 or Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111, ensuring anonymity if desired.
