Brawl on board Waiheke Ferry forces vessel back to shore

Chaos erupted on a Waiheke Island ferry, turning a routine midnight cruise into a floating fight club, forcing the vessel to make an unexpected U-turn and sparking a police scramble that left passengers stranded and startled.

The Fullers360 ferry, just moments after departing the Matiatia Ferry Terminal at 11pm, became the unlikely arena for a top-deck tussle that had fists flying and tempers flaring. The fight was so bad that the crew had no choice but to steer the ship back to safety, putting the night’s voyage on pause and dialing up the boys in blue for backup.

Witnesses described the scene as a sudden burst of aggression among a group of passengers, prompting a swift response from the crew who were determined to dock back at Waiheke and await the cavalry.

The ferry, now a crime scene on water, sat idly by the terminal for a tense hour and a half, with the crew and remaining passengers in a standoff with time, waiting for law enforcement to arrive and defuse the situation.

Cops escorted several unruly individuals off the ferry, restoring a semblance of order and allowing the vessel to eventually continue its journey back to Auckland City, this time with extra security guards on board to ensure a smooth sail. Upon reaching the city, the ferry berthed without further ado.

Fullers360, in a statement full of regret and apologies, lamented the inconvenience and delay caused to their customers but stood firm on their decision, emphasising that safety trumps all and praising their crew for handling the drama with utmost professionalism. They extended a heartfelt thanks to the passengers for their patience and understanding during the unexpected detour.

Police have yet to weigh in on the brawl leaving many to wonder just what sparked the midnight melee.
