Christmas Day road rage attack in Auckland leaves driver injured and witnesses shaken

A man on his way to a Christmas celebration in Auckland’s Flat Bush was allegedly attacked in a road rage incident that left him with injuries, including a swollen eye socket and broken glasses.

The altercation began when the man attempted to merge into a single lane, prompting the driver of a Toyota to speed up aggressively. Dashcam footage shows the Toyota driver tailgating, throwing objects at the man’s vehicle, and swerving dangerously into oncoming traffic.

The situation escalated when the Toyota driver stopped abruptly, exited his vehicle, and punched the man twice through his open window, causing him to slump in his seat and his car to lurch forward.

The attacker then snatched and threw the victim’s phone, further injuring him. Witnesses, including a family with a dashcam, captured the incident but felt too fearful to intervene.

Natalie, a witness who recorded the confrontation, described the scene as frightening and chaotic, with the aggressive behavior causing significant disruption to traffic. Her footage captured the Toyota driver’s erratic attempts to overtake vehicles and his violent actions toward the victim.

Despite the man’s injuries and the apparent escalation, police initially received no immediate reports of the incident but have since begun investigating. Natalie emphasized the need to highlight such dangerous behaviour, noting its impact on bystanders and other motorists. Both the victim and witnesses expressed relief that the dashcam footage could provide critical evidence for the investigation.
