Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill reported that officers weren’t taking any chances, monitoring the group’s movements as they made their way south from Picton.
The watchful eyes of Tasman District Police caught up with the Mongols at the Picton ferry terminal, where several gang members and their associates were flagged immediately. Two drivers were slapped with driving bans, and one motorcycle was impounded. Under strict surveillance, the gang convoy was shadowed along the highway through Kaikoura and into Canterbury.
At the Glasnevin checkpoint, police inspected each vehicle, ensuring every rider and driver complied with the law. A high-ranking Mongols member was banned from riding due to his bike’s failure to meet licensing standards, and another patched member had his invalid driver’s license confiscated.
Hill said Canterbury Police will maintain a heightened presence on the roads to deter any unlawful activity. He urged the public to report any immediate safety concerns by calling 111 or share anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
