Former Army Officer Savenaca Seruvatu sentenced for rape of sex worker in Wellington

Ex-army officer Savenaca Seruvatu has been sentenced to four years in jail for raping a sex worker in Wellington.

The Wellington District Court found him guilty of sexual violation by rape in February, after he knowingly removed a condom without consent during intercourse at an adult entertainment club in Lower Hutt in September 2020.

Despite Seruvatu’s defense claiming the condom came off accidentally, evidence and testimonies led to his conviction.

The court acknowledged Seruvatu’s military service and contributions to the public health system, granting a 30% reduction in his sentence, a decision that the victim found discouraging.

This case has been highlighted as significant for the sex worker community, underscoring their right to justice and the serious impact of sexual violence.
