The Wellington mother of three, described by friends as a strong and selfless wahine toa, didn’t hesitate to dive in and save the children.
Emergency services arrived around 1:20 p.m., but despite CPR efforts, Te Paa could not be revived.
Known for her outgoing and confident nature, Te Paa had travelled to Northland to celebrate Christmas with family.
“She passed being a hero. She’ll be happy that she saved them,” a friend said.
Te Paa will be laid to rest following a service at Te Whakamaharatanga Marae on Monday.
