High-Speed chaos in Palmy: Cops arrest duo after pedestrian hit

Drama erupted on Palmerston North's Pioneer Highway when police attempted to stop a person of interest around 2:30 p.m.

The driver had other plans, though, and sped off, sparking a heart-pounding chase through the Manawatu city’s streets.

Cops pursued the vehicle to West Street before cutting the sirens and following from a distance. But the high-stakes chase turned dangerous when the fleeing car struck a pedestrian on Pitt Street at 2:42 p.m. Fortunately, the victim escaped serious injury as a police unit immediately rushed to provide aid.

Meanwhile, the pursuit roared on until spikes were deployed at Seddon Street and Tremaine Ave, bringing the suspect’s car to a grinding halt on Amberley Avenue. One occupant was immediately cuffed, while the other tried to bolt. A Police Dog Unit quickly tracked down the second suspect at a nearby Clarke Avenue address, leading to his arrest.

Police are now weighing charges against the 21-year-old driver and the man originally sought for arrest. Despite the volatile nature of these chases, officers emphasised their commitment to minimising risk to the public.

Police urge anyone witnessing suspicious activity to dial 111 for immediate action, or 105 if reporting after the fact.
