Papakura supermarket evacuated in armed drama

Shoppers at New World Papakura were sent scrambling this afternoon as armed police descended on the supermarket following a firearms incident.

Witnesses reported seeing a man wielding a firearm inside the store, prompting an urgent evacuation around 3 PM.

According to police, the man had earlier threatened staff at a nearby business before returning to the same area hours later, sparking a high-stakes search that ended with his arrest shortly after 5:30 PM.

A police spokesperson confirmed the situation was under control and reassured the public there was no ongoing risk.

Customers described the chaos, with one man, carrying his baby in a front pack, saying the evacuation announcement over the intercom was initially met with disbelief until the urgency became clear.

Moments later, armed officers filed into the supermarket, and the man witnessed the suspect being led away in handcuffs.

Social media buzzed with reports of the Eagle helicopter circling overhead and police blocking the store’s entrance earlier in the afternoon. While no injuries or direct threats to supermarket staff were reported, the swift police response left locals shaken but relieved.
