The NY Post reported today his family is now pursuing legal action over the horrifying incident.
Just weeks ago, doctors deemed Gilbert nearly “brain dead” and placed him on life support.
But he’s now talking, eating, and battling memory loss, says family attorney Claudia Payne.
Gilbert was left underwater for a harrowing ten minutes after a friend allegedly pushed him off a dock at a Farmerville restaurant on April 14. Astonishingly, none of his so-called friends tried to save him.
If not for the quick-thinking bravery of Dawson Foust, a restaurant patron unconnected to the group, who dove in and pulled him out, the outcome could have been tragic.
Now, Gilbert’s family is launching a civil lawsuit against Rhett’s Tails and Shells, the restaurant accused of irresponsibly failing to restrict access to the lake while serving alcohol. They also call for the arrest of the woman responsible for the push, asserting that law enforcement is turning a blind eye due to race.
“Had Chris, a black man, pushed a white woman into the lake, he would’ve been arrested,” claims attorney Payne, stressing that they only seek justice under the law.
With the Farmerville Police tight-lipped due to their ongoing investigation, Gilbert’s family demands answers. Video footage reportedly shows Gilbert’s so-called friends standing idly by as he struggled in the water.
