Savage courthouse lift attack: Lawyer Brintyn Smith feigns death to survive brutal assault

Family Court lawyer Brintyn Smith faced a terrifying ordeal inside a Whangārei courthouse lift when he was savagely attacked by Isaac Aydon.

Smith, recounting the harrowing incident from 15 months ago, revealed how the more he screamed for help, the harder Aydon hit him, forcing him to pretend to be dead in a desperate bid to survive. The ambush left Smith with multiple injuries, including a fractured sternum, nose, and thyroid, and a severe concussion. The attacker, Aydon, has been sentenced to two years and seven months in prison.

In a moving video by the New Zealand Law Society, Smith detailed his physical and emotional recovery from the brutal assault, describing the overwhelming support he received nationwide and globally. Although the attack was life-changing, Smith is determined to turn his trauma into a positive force, advocating for better courthouse security. He now participates in a panel dedicated to improving safety measures, ensuring his colleagues are protected from similar violent incidents. Despite the ongoing mental impact, Smith is slowly returning to his legal practice with renewed resolve.
