Tragic loss strikes Central Interceptor Project: Worker suffers fatal medical event

A construction worker tragically lost his life following a sudden medical crisis while on working at Watercare's Central Interceptor project in Māngere, Auckland.

The incident unfolded in the South Auckland suburb around 3.25pm, casting a shadow of grief over the entire project team.

Despite the valiant efforts of emergency services rushed to Greenwood Rd, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a somber moment for all involved. The worker, a valued member of the Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture team responsible for bringing the project to life, leaves behind a team in mourning.

Project director Francesco Saibene expressed the deep shock and sorrow felt by the team. He described tight-knit nature of the group and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this incredibly difficult time.

Shayne Cunis, Watercare Central Interceptor’s executive programme director, vowed to offer unwavering support to both the contractor and staff as they navigate through this tragic period. Authorities, including the police and WorkSafe, have been called in to investigate, although early reports suggest that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
