The Warriors suffered a narrow defeat by the the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks 12-16 on Friday night. The Warriors initially dominated the match jumping to a 12-0 lead with early tries from Addin Fonua-Blake and Luke Metcalf. However, the team’s momentum faltered due to critical errors before and after halftime, allowing Cronulla to clinch the game.
Webster praised the team’s initial strategy and execution calling the first 20 minutes especially impressive as the Warriors controlled the game with a simple and effective attack.
But penalties and defensive lapses allowed the sharks to gain ground and eventually take the lead through tries by Jesse Ramien and Ronaldo Mulitalo, followed by a go-ahead score from Siosifa Talakai.
Despite regaining some control and creating opportunities in the final quarter, the Warriors struggled to capitalise on their chances to secure a win. Webster told the Warriors’ website the need for better communication and execution, particularly in critical phases of the game.
Team captain Tohu Harris echoed the coach’s sentiments, noting the team’s tendency to undermine their efforts with brief lapses in concentration, which ultimately handed momentum to their opponents. Despite outperforming Cronulla in several statistical categories, such as possession, completed sets, running metres, and tackle breaks, the Warriors were unable to translate their advantages into a victory.
Looking ahead, the Warriors are set to face their first away challenge of the season against the Storm in Melbourne, aiming to refine their gameplay and secure a win.
